Project 365: Day 25–Spring Has Sprung…In January?
So I was outside today after the, like, seventy-ninth day of rain we’ve had here in the East Bay. I love rain, mind you, but when you have three little munchkins who need a fair dose of outdoor time every day, it can start to get to you. Let’s just say that the glitter paint and the dot markers and the bead kit and the paintbrush-pens all got a good workout today. If you want to know how intense of a workout, then just ask the poor, glittery kitchen table. It has some tales of woe to pass on to anyone willing to listen.
The late afternoon light combined with the gray, post-rain skies provided a beautiful hue to the wintery greens in our backyard. I went out with the sole intention of capturing some dead-foliage photos or taking a snapshot of the orange tree in all its juicy glory right now, but instead I was greeted with…no…it can’t be…it’s way too early for…are you kidding me?
Spring blossoms.
I have no idea what kind of miniature tree the red blossoms belong to since it was in our yard before we moved in, but the ephemeral blooms are just fantastic for all of the five or seven days they stay on the branches. The pear tree is about to burst with buds; the marigolds are ruffling their orange, fluffy feathers; the mysterious cyclamen-looking plants that pop up under the Japanese maple every year have unfurled their little fronds and are pushing up through the brown crumbles of fallen maple leaves. And amongst all of this new life, there are still some bright red, juice-swollen, fall-forgotten pomegranates amongst the bird-pecked, sad ones on the tree. Remnants of fall make the little tidbits of spring so much prettier, don’t you think?
