The OLD and UGLY Fireplace

Wouldn’t you think that the worst time to begin–and, hence, try to finish–major home renovations would be in the few months preceding the birth of your third child?  Yeah, Jack and I would probably tell anyone who even breathed a word about attempting something like that that they were insane, but I don’t think that the two of us could be labeled as “crazy”.  We set out to just do a few changes in the house before daughter #3 came along, but we ended up falling victim to the “domino effect” of house projects.  If we moved Abbie–our second–out of the nursery, that meant that she would either have to go to the guest room or share with her sister.  The guest room is the biggest room, so the two girls sharing a bedroom in the biggest room sounded like a good idea.  Then, if Sadie vacated her room and shared with her sister in what is now the guest room, then Sadie’s room would have to become the guest room/play room, and it would need a complete overhaul too.  So, the furniture moving began, and before you know it, we’re renovating four rooms at once in our house!  On top of moving the girls into the guest room to share, we are completely revamping our living room (we lived without a ceiling in there for almost four years!) and changing our current den into more of an office/play room.  Why do we need two play rooms, you ask?  Well, three girls equals lots of Barbies, belive-you-me.  Here’s a photo of our new living room fireplace and surround.  It used to be old, painted brick with no mantel, but we’ve added a custom-made mantel–a la Jack–and some seriously beautiful recycled glass mosaic tiles from Oceanside Tile and some limestone for the hearth.  Still need to add a fireplace screen, but that’s just the icing, right?
